Description:
John Leavitt was a Marblehead and Lynn Mass. skipper,
journalist and painter. A number of his paintings are at The
Peabody Essex Museum in Salem Mass, This very well detailed
watercolor is typical of many he painted. A careful search
will show a number of people on deck. The ship is the Formosa
as shown on the bow and stern on the ship. She flys the
American flag. This needs a new matting but otherwise is in
wonderful condition. Painting is signed and dated in the lower
right.
